Oscars

[Movies

Well, I almost stayed awake for the entire show.

You won’t find any spoilers here in terms of individual movies, but you don’t want to read this if you TiVo’d the Oscars.  Actually, if you did that, you probably don’t want to be on the Internet at all until you do watch.

Hillary Swank is a very intense woman.  I like watching her and I do think she’s incredibly talented.

It was nice to see Morgan Freeman finally win. I did find his performance in "Million Dollar Baby" Oscar-worthy. So often this is the scenario: an actor is nominated year after year, and he/she doesn't win until finally, one year someone decides that it's that person's year, regardless of the film or that actor's performance in said film. Perfect example: Denzel Washington. Amazing actor in my opinion. Brilliant in Glory and Philadelphia, and definitely others, but won the Oscar for Training Day. I found his performance in that far less impressive than his performance in the 2 aforementioned films. Maybe I just didn't care for Training Day. But I digress.

I thought Chris Rock was quite funny in the opening monologue. His crack at Colin Farrell was harsh but dead-on. His Bush cracks made me giggle. But he tapered off a bit throughout the show. I didn't see much of the Chris Rock that I so enjoy, but I suppose he was trying to behave for the easily-offended. Mission accomplished.

Although I haven't seen Ray, I was pleased that Jamie Foxx won Best Actor because I've heard nothing but raves about his performance from friends whose taste in movies I generally trust. I would have loved for Don Cheadle to have won for Hotel Rwanda but I will settle for knowing (or hoping) that his career will only be boosted by his nomination. I could watch Don Cheadle take out his trash and be enthralled.

And speaking of Hotel Rwanda, although not really nominated for any Oscars, it remains my favorite film of last year. Maybe that's another post.

I found myself in the dark this year about so many of the films. That's my fault for not going to see many of them. But it didn't help that they didn't show clips like they usually do. Of course they did for the biggies, but no clips from the nominated documentaries for example? How am I supposed to know if I have an interest in seeing something called Ryan if I haven't a clue as to its subject?

I was surprised that it wasn't an all-out Aviator sweep. And I am still waiting for someone to convince me to go see that. I don't think Leonardo DiCaprio has done anything Oscar-worthy since Gilbert Grape.

It appeared that Prince and Johnny Depp coordinated outfits before the Oscars, and did so badly. But I dig both of them so much that I am willing to overlook it. (I tried unsuccessfully to find pictures of them to link here.) And that will be my only comment on Oscar fashion.

Your thoughts?
