Dan Fisher – STV Tribute

Monday, July 9th, 2007

I recently set about digitizing some old stuff (since bits and bytes take up less space than video tapes + pictures)…

One of the things I’ve digitized is my Off The Cuff (Student Television) tribute:

Ah. To be young and have too much time on your hands…

Credit should be given to Matt Burdorff who (I believe) was the primary editor for this.

A Cleaner World

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

A couple of months ago, I put together a “Chore Web Application”:

http://askingforthirds.org/tasks/

My motivation for putting this together is because I’m a slob and can blissfully live in squalor. My wife on the other hand will live in squalor until she can’t take it any more and then explode into (justified) anger/disappointment that the house is worse than a pig sty.

So to hopefully avoid explosions, I made the web page above to make me aware of what parts of the house are due for a once-over cleaning.

Since then the house has been clean, we’re both happier, and we can have friends over without fear of the “So, do you guys ever clean this house?” comments.

I have toyed with the idea of expanding this and making it into a commercial site, but I don’t know if there’s enough mass-appeal to make it worthwhile. I don’t think most folks want to head to a computer after they’ve done a few chores around the house.

Although it does kind of make cleaning your house feel like playing a video game.
BTW- Until today, there wasn’t a “public” view into this page. It was this post from a site called Unclutterer that inspired me to make a “public” view… You’ll also see a comment from me in this post that’s very similar to what you’re reading right now :)

Another one bites the dust?

Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

Apparently, Queen snuck a backwards message into ‘Another One Bites the Dust’. (Either intentionally or unintentionally)

I listened to this before reading the wikipedia entry and I couldn’t hear any message.

After reading the wikipedia entry, though, it was clearer.

Is this intentional? I dunno. But it is neat.

Perlcast

Perlcast.com

I didn’t see the big deal about podcasts, but Josh McAdams has made me realize that it opens the possibility for radio shows for niche content.

While not everyone can get excited about the Perl programming language, I can see this technology making other niche content more easily accessible.

I’d love to have my own podcast, but while I have (or could put together) the necessary technology to make it happen, I don’t think I have the domain expertise necessary to make it poignant…

  • Josh McAdams has already cornered the market on Perl podcasting.
  • I could discuss sports, but it would just be me “parroting” PTI.
  • I could discuss the books I’ve read, but I’m not sure that people would want to listen to a book report :)
  • I could discuss this site… With me having an audio interview with everyone who posts to askingforthirds…

Any interest from the 3-or-so Askingforthirds readers out there for an audio interview/discussion for Askingforthirds posts?

Corporate Champ!

Thursday, October 7th, 2004

While futzing around at work, I wrote some (marginally useful) search plugins for Mozilla Firefox.

Not too notable except that I thought that the search plugins were useful enough to share with co-workers (and other interested parties), and since I have a login to the Red Hat corporate blog, it seemed like the easiest way to bring the plugins some attention.

So, now and forever, I my contribution has been enshrined on Red Hat’s website.

Tricks of the Trade

Some of these are clever.

I agree with the showmanship aspect of ‘Juggler’, but the ‘Nurse’ advice seems a little harsh (make an unconscious person smack themselves?)…

UNC Webcam

Monday, April 19th, 2004

Check out the webcam on top of Venable Hall on UNC’s campus that can be remote controlled.

It is kind of sad how much of the campus is torn up right now…

Not that progress isn’t a good thing…

Erin and I went into the new Undergrad Library a week ago and we were
blown away by how much it is improved over the old Undergrad.

Subservient Chicken

Thursday, April 8th, 2004

Drop whatever you are working on right now and go to this site:

http://www.subservientchicken.com/

It is GOLD:

You tell the guy dressed up like a chicken to do something, and he does it.

I told him to ‘Play Air Guitar’, ‘Jump on the Couch’, and ‘Do the Macarena’ and he did all three.

WordPress

Thursday, February 5th, 2004

You’ll notice that my website looks different.

I decided to try out WordPress.

I am motivated by the fact that Movable Type costs $150 for sites that intend to make a profit.

I do not have $150 for that purpose, but I would like the ability to use my website to highlight auctions of things I am selling on eBay, things that I would like to sell directly, or perhaps even join Google’s adwords program.

So, I decided to use PHP-based (but freely licensed) WordPress instead of a Perl-based (but costly) Movable Type.

There is alot of stuff that broke in the move. Most of it was not being used anyway (according to the log files). There are some things that deserve attention (notably, the bottom nav bar that shows what other folks on askingforthirds have recently posted and the “Web Searches that Led to Askingforthirds”) and I hope to get to them before too long.

Neurology

Wild!

While sitting in your chair, lift your right foot slightly off the ground and move it in clockwise circles. Now draw the numeral “6″ in the air with your right hand. Your foot will involuntarily reverse direction.

This seems harder than rubbing your stomach and patting your head.
