Moonlight Graham

Sunday, June 26th, 2005

I had no idea that “Moonlight Graham” from Field of Dreams was an actual baseball player.

According to an ESPN article, he not only played one game in the majors (like in the movie), but he’s also the older brother of (former US Senator) Frank Porter Graham.

This is notable to me, because the UNC Student Union is named after Frank Porter Graham.

The world used to be much smaller.

Free Screening of Farenheit 9/11

Tuesday, August 24th, 2004

This is kind of neat…

Someone is willing to pay for all of the seats at the Varsity for the last two showings of Farenheit 9/11.

That means, if you go on Thursday at 7:00 or 9:30, you can get in for free.

While I appreciate the effort of someone who wants to get the “word out to the people”, I kind of doubt, that seeing Farenheit 9/11 is going to change any Chapel Hill resident’s opinion on George Bush…

If you like him, it’s liberal propaganda claptrap.
If you don’t like him, well, welcome to Chapel Hill.

In Honor Of Indiana Jones Release on DVD

Friday, October 24th, 2003

Steve recommended that I post my lyrics to the Indiana Jones theme in honor of the trilogy being released on DVD this week.

I can’t really do this without also giving credit to Trey Ashcraft who came up with some (most?) of the lyrics.

[Sung to the tune of Indiana Jones theme's crescendo]

Indiana, Jones (a) jones.
He digs up treasures.
He digs up bones, bones, bones.

Takes measures.
Hires a crew.
Digs up treasures, but not for you, you, you.

Sees treasure,
and then he takes.
Watch out for boulders, and for snakes, snakes, snakes.

We met his dad,
but not his mom.
He fights Nazis, and Mol-a-rom.

Kill Bill

Thursday, October 16th, 2003

I like it when movies ‘disturb’ me…

If I finish watching a movie and the writer and/or director did not really ‘move’ me, then I think:
“Why didn’t I just sit around and read (bland) Greeting Cards?”

Keep in mind that there are limits to the amount that I enjoy being disturbed… The movies ‘Requiem for a Dream’ and ‘Happiness’ pushed those limits.

Unfortunately, as I watch more movies, I become jaded and that makes worthwhile movies harder to find.

(With that in mind…)

I saw Kill Bill last night with Erin.

I liked it alot.

The scene with Uma Thurman’s character and “Buck” made me want to flip through some Hallmark cards…

Battle of the Marvel Stars

Monday, May 5th, 2003

Since X-Men 2 just came out (and it kicks major butt), I figured it was time for a comic book related post.

A frequent topic of debate between James Khanlarian and myself is “Who would win in a fight between Spider-Man and Wolverine?”.

Personally, I think that Spider-Man would win this particular melee.

- Spider-Man has the proportional strength of a spider… That means that he has superhuman strength… Throw some cars at Wolverine until he’s knocked unconscious and then you have a limited amount of time while he’s unconscious to find a way around his healing factor. (Drown him perhaps?)
- While Wolverine is probably a better fighter than Spider-Man, I think the difference is marginal. Spidey-sense, plus incredible agility should keep Wolverine from causing serious harm.
- I would grant that claws are much more dangerous than Spider-Man’s webbing, but the webbing can be used from a distance, while the claws require Wolverine to be in close proximity.

I guess the environment of the battle would be a factor too. If they’re fighting in a broom closet, there’s no way Spider-Man would be leaving alive. If they’re in the open, and there’s plenty of heavy objects to hurl, Spider-Man has the edge.

But, there’s really only one way to settle this debate…

A New Poll:

A Matter of Economics

Sunday, April 27th, 2003

I’m tempted to try Netflix, based on Steve’s recommendation.

But, I wonder whether it would be worth it to spend the money on HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax (which I’m currently doing) and on Netflix.

Since both cost about the same ($20/month), I’m going to run a poll on this question. (which also will give me a chance to use/tweak polling on this site)

Raiders of The Lost Ark… Don’t Bother!

Wednesday, January 29th, 2003

I remember watching Raiders of The Lost Ark with my Dad and he seemed disappointed with the ending.

Not so much that the Ark was stored in a big warehouse, but the fact that Indiana Jones had nothing to do with the resolution of the story. That is, the title character was totally superfluous to the story of the Nazis being foiled in their quest to tame the Ark.

Dad’s point was that the Nazis were not beaten by Jones, but by opening the Ark at their own ritual.

You could even make the argument that Dr. Jones did the Nazis a service by postponing the inevitable wrath that follows from attempting to harness divine icons for your own nefarious purposes.

If Indiana Jones had just stayed at home, then the Nazis would still have been electrocuted/burned/had-their-faces-melt-like-a-timelapsed-candle AND Capt. Katanga’s cargo wouldn’t have been delayed by the Nazis boarding his ship.

Movie Checkout

Tuesday, January 28th, 2003

I’ve installed MovieMate a PHP based Movie Database for the DVDs that I own.

You can view the new system here.

This system implements a frequently requested feature of the site: DVD checkouts.
(In fact, I’ve already put up the movies that Ed and John Sellers have previously borrowed.)

Hopefully, this system will have some kind of utility…

It currently only has my DVDs listed.
If I ever get enough time and energy, I’ll put my Laserdiscs and VHS tapes on there too.

Wide-screen Laserdiscs

Tuesday, February 27th, 2001

I’ve watched the (recently-acquired) laserdiscs of Empire Strikes Back and
Superman and I drool everytime I see them in widescreen.

Stop me before I kill again…

Sunday, February 18th, 2001

I’ve been unhappy with the number of classic movies that are available on DVD.
(Star Wars, Back to The Future, Superman Trilogy, Indiana Jones Trilogy,
Glengarry Glen Ross, Citizen Kane, Godfather I & II), so when I saw an
opportunity to pick up a Laserdisc player for $100 I pounced.

If I want to fully exploit my new Home Theater system, I’m going to need to buy
a demodulator (which will probably cost another $100.00), but I’ve now started
to lurk in the eBay Laserdisc section for some of the classics mentioned above.
