How Much Is TV Sports Worth to Me?

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

The past week, MLB sold exclusive broadcast rights for their MLB Extra Innings package to DirectTV.

I’ve gotten MLB Extra Innings for the past 3 years, but since I have Time-Warner, that’s going to be a large stumbling blcok for me to get it a 4th year… UNLESS, I get DirectTV installed.

If I get DirectTV, I’d also be able to watch the NFL Network and ESPNU (which I expect will continue to broadcast some UNC games)

This also hits me just as I’m considering getting an HDTV setup…

This “perfect storm” makes me think that by the end of it, I’ll be paying ~$2500+ to get a nice HDTV and DirectTV.

Then, I’ll be paying ~$200/Month for DirectTV, HDTiVo service, Internet, and Phone (since we’ll probably have to move to Bellsouth for DSL).

Plus: the $200 yearly cost to get the Extra Innings package.

Ugh. That’s alot of money… Especially for someone who proclaims that he’d like to not have a TV in the house… (I watch sporting events, the Simpsons, and PTI)

Suggestions welcome!

Cheap Seats

Sunday, June 13th, 2004

I accidentally ran into the show Cheap Seats when I was in Atlanta.

They were showing the Spelling Bee with the weird kid who kept smelling her fingers.

Erin and I could not turn it off (even though we were dog tired from the day’s events).

It is not quite as good as MST3k, (keep in mind, I hold MST3k in high esteem), but it is funny.

The hosts are a little smarmy (so the show may not appeal to everyone) but if you can handle that, I would recommend this show to casual ESPN fans and fans of MST3k.

Map Of Springfield

Thursday, May 27th, 2004

Someone spent alot of time on this:

Map of Springfield

I can’t believe Costington’s is beside Sprawl Mart.

You have to think that with Sprawl Mart’s low prices, that Costington’s “Yeeesssss!” guy would be out of a job.

Update: D’oh. It looks like the map just got linked from Slashdot (a popular nerd hangout), and that’s going to mean the performance of the site goes way down. (a/k/a The Slashdot Effect)

Would Anyone Like to See…

Monday, May 3rd, 2004

I spent a good portion of Sunday trying to get my TiVo networked.

After a few hours of hardware and software tinkering, it is finally to the point that I control my TiVo from a remote location. (Most of the time was spent backing up the TiVo hard drive and putting the webserver software on the TiVo drive.)

(For the curious, I’m using Tivoweb)

While I think that this is pretty sweet, I’m not sure how to integrate this with the rest of my website…

I could make a web page that would show

  • What I’m watching right now
  • What I’ve recorded
  • Things I’m going to record

My question to you (my audience) is this:
Is there any interest in what I watch? and if so, what would you like to know?

My two cents is that I’d be interested in what other folks watch… (I think) it gives me some insight into the person…
