Askingforthirds Suggestions

Monday, June 2nd, 2003

Ed (in a haze of anger over the state of the website) posts the following comment under my post about WMD in Iraq:

Why isn’t there a little suggestion box in the corner so I could post things like this every now and then? I think the general public would love to help you help the site become all it can be!

I have already set up something like this:
One of the Forums (see the forums in the right nav bar under the Personal Lists, but above the Links?) is called ‘Askingforthirds’.

This is intended to be the place where folks (i.e. Tejan, when he needs more content or Ed, when he’s in a blind rage) can put their own thoughts about Askingforthirds while remaining on topic.

While it may not be displayed as prominently as it could be, if you mouse over one of the Forum’s names on the front page, it will tell you when it was last updated.

Perhaps if it were displayed more prominently, it would be used more? Perhaps a user of the site could post their opinion of how the forums should be displayed in the forums themselves?

Anyway, to see the rest of Ed‘s questions/comments (which I felt were inappropriate for a post on finding WMD in Iraq, go to the Askingforthirds forum).

Here’s a link: Askingforthirds Forum

Update:
In addition, I’ve added a ‘Forum Chatter’ sidebar to the right navigation.
This scans for recent posts to the Forums and gives you the title of the topic and a link to the topic (and in the pop-up window, it tells you who started the topic and when the last post was made)

Where’s the beef?

Frequent reader Tejan writes:

Where are the insightful ponderings on the ordinary rituals of everyday life? I mean, no offense or anything, I appreciate the advances in the sites offerings – even though Ed has not posted a rant since who knows how long… – the the initial draw to askingforthirds.com was the commentary on everything from book reviews, movies reviews to whether or not a human can actually drink a gallon of milk (for those of us who have read archives, we know the answer is no.)

Anyway – if you aim to please those that log in regularly (mainly myself) bring back the biting prose.

.org & other TLDs

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2002

Frequent poster Tejan asks:

Dan,

Question of the day – How did you set up a site with a .org suffix? I was under the impression (with my very limited knowledge of the web) that .org sites were reserved for site of organizations – hence the org.

Of course, that is obviously not true – is the internet now a free for all for websites, due to the avalanche of created sites. And, does that mean you could create a .gov site? Or, is that still just reserved for government?

Please enlighten me.

Thanks,
Tejan

I’m not an expert on Top Level Domains (TLDs), but ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers)’s a/k/a ‘The Folks In Charge of Names on the Internet’ does not enforce any restrictions on who can purchase a ‘.com’, ‘.org’, or ‘.net’.
